Middle Years (5-8)
The major emphasis in the Middle Years is on students being successful
learners, becoming more independent and taking more responsibility for their
actions, and establishing the values that will allow them to become good
citizens.

The Middle school incorporates strategies from the Early Years Literacy
and Numeracy programs to achieve improved student outcomes in English and
Mathematics. Students are engaged in speaking and listening, reading and writing
with an emphasis on functionality. ‘Hands
On’ activities are an integral part of the numeracy program delivered through
small group learning and individual instruction. Self help and daily living
skills programs provide positive and purposeful experiences which students can
take into their life beyond school.
ICT is integrated into all areas of the curriculum across the school particularly Literacy and Numeracy and is used to empower students to be active participants in their learning. Students are able to access the internet where appropriate to research projects. Digital portfolios are used to record and celebrate student achievement.

The curriculum is integrated and units of work are developed which engage students in purposeful, relevant activities within supportive learning environments.
Students in the middle years access specialist teaching sessions in visual and performing arts, music and physical education. They participate in swimming and bike education programs and have the opportunity to be part of the school choir and band. The teaching of interpersonal skills (cooperation, relationship with peers, team building) is integrated into all curriculum areas and practised during excursions into the community and an outdoor education program which includes camps at Blackwood, Halls Gap and Anglesea.
